Is Consumer Debt Getting Way Out of Hand?

Could you imagine what it was like to live a hundred years ago or so, when our ancestors were carving their way through this country? Back then there was no such thing as 'credit'. If you wanted to buy something, you either had to have the money or you had to have something to barter. Then things started changing, and people needed items that they couldn’t readily afford. That’s when credit became increasingly popular. When this happened, small businesses would allow customers that they were familiar with to have a line of credit, giving them what they needed and letting them slowly pay for it over time. Then banks grabbed the idea and soon everybody was looking for a loan. Eventually credit cards were created, and now who knows what is next? The big question, though, is this: is consumer debt getting out of hand?

Consumer Debt

Let’s take the story of John Smith. John was working in a decent job and had only taken out a loan in order to pay for his vehicle. Then he met a woman named Susan and the two decided to get married. In order to pay for their large wedding, they had to take out a loan for a few thousand dollars. While they were paying that back, they decided that they wanted to purchase a house, so they took out a mortgage in order to get the house of their dreams. Then, when they finished paying off the first loan they’d taken out for the wedding, they realized that they both needed new vehicles, so they got more debt on their plate. Then Susan and John were surprised by a bundle of joy, and since babies are so expensive, they had no option but to get a credit card in order to help them to pay for some of the necessities that they needed every month, like diapers and formula.

But once they had the credit card, Susan and John started paying for things other than the diapers and formula, like the new television that they really wanted to have, or a new fridge once their broke down. The next thing they knew they had two children and a mountain of debt.

Getting Them Early

One problem with consumer debt is that the credit card companies have figured out that the best way to get money is to get the consumer’s early, which is why, on any given day, you may find a credit card company trying to give away credit cards to students on a college campus, often giving them gift certificates or free t-shirts if they sign up for a credit card.

Consumer debt is becoming a huge problem, but unfortunately there is no way that you can get consumer debt back under control, except to talk with your state representatives. You can, however, control your personal debt levels, and you can get your own unsecured debt under control. In many cases, debt settlement can help.
