Debt Elimination Program

You should not feel bad because you have so much personal consumer debt. Given the way that credit card companies in the past freely gave out credit, coupled with a nationwide mentality that we need the newest and best of everything, most Americans have some level of credit card debt. Although it may make you ashamed of your situation and leave you wondering how you ended up there in the first place, the key is not to dwell on how bad you feel, but rather work toward a solution. Many people try to pay down their debt on their own, such as by paying double or triple the minimum payments. You can also adjust your household budget and cut spending in certain areas in order to free up more cash to spend on paying down your debt. These solutions, however, often barely make a dent in the overall debt picture because the high interest rates on the cards often cause the debt to mount, even as you are paying it off.

A more realistic solution to seeing the end of your credit card debt is with a debt elimination program. There are several different types of programs that fall under that rubric and label themselves in that way. The most common program is that the company will work with your creditors to work out a deal typically involving consolidating debt so that you only have one payment. You may also see a decrease in your interest rate. Many credit card companies will lower the rates for responsible customers. If you are a higher risk to the credit card companies because you have missed payments, it may be difficult to get the creditors to want to help you as much. There are, however, elimination programs that can help those in situations like that as well, they just may be harder to find. Many banks and credit card companies are now much more hesitant to deal with risky customers given what has happened in the last year with the credit market.

Be aware that some companies disguise themselves as a debt elimination solution, but really their number one goal is to make themselves money and not help you out of your situation. Make sure a company is affiliated with a consumer protection agency such as United States Organization of Bankruptcy Alternatives. Also be sure to stay away from groups that are actually affiliated with banks as they will not have your best interests at heart either.

Some programs may involve more drastic solutions like bankruptcy. It is important that you do research on your own regarding bankruptcy and the long-lasting repercussions of filing for it before you meet with a company that may try to pressure you to do so. In the vast majority of cases, there are options that fall short of bankruptcy that you can consider. If the people you meet with are unwilling to find you a program that does not involve bankruptcy and you do not want to file it, you should look for a new company. However, if you are convinced that it is the credit card debt reduction method for you, bankruptcy really is an option. You have to be careful, though, not to repeat the behaviors that got you in that position to begin with.
